Set up your Mistral key

Advanced (Pro) option: Lexio can use your own Mistral API key instead of the built-in engine. Free tier available — 1 million tokens per month — and your data goes through your own account, not a third-party server.

Create a Mistral account

Go to console.mistral.ai and click Sign up. Google or GitHub login takes thirty seconds.

No credit card needed. The free tier gives you 1 million tokens per month — about 1,500 email rewrites. Plenty.

Verify your phone number

Mistral requires phone verification before activating API keys (anti-abuse). You get a 6-digit code by SMS, you type it in, done.

If you skip this step, API calls return 401 Unauthorized even with a valid key. It's the #1 cause of errors.

Create an API key

Once signed in, go to console.mistral.ai/api-keys.

  • Click Create new key
  • Name it (e.g. “Lexio desktop”)
  • Leave Workspace as default
  • Click Create

The key is shown only once. Copy it immediately — if you close the window without copying, you'll have to create a new one.

Never share it.An API key is the equivalent of a password for your Mistral account.

Paste it into Lexio

  • Right-click the Lexio icon (notification area) → Settings…
  • General tab
  • Mistral API key field
  • Paste your key (Ctrl+V) and click Test
Encrypted storage. The key is encrypted with DPAPI (Windows Data Protection API) and bound to your Windows session. Copied to another PC, it cannot be decrypted.

First test

Select any text (an email, a message), press Ctrl+Alt+W, tick a preset and click apply. The rewritten text streams in.
